LACAH IX: Fall 2025
On March 25th, 1911, a fire broke out on the upper floors of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City, killing 146 garment workers, most of them young immigrant women. Could the factory owners have taken simple precautions such as unlocking exit doors, installing adequate fire escapes, or reducing overcrowding to prevent the tragedy? Were the workers’ lives treated as expendable in pursuit of profit and efficiency? The critical question remains whether the owners’ negligent decisions placed employees in a deadly environment where escape was nearly impossible.
